Who is eligible to work on campus?

The only way to begin work in Canada is when you start your study program. It is not possible for you to work before your studying program. Only students whose study permit indicates an approval to work on campus.

To work on your school campus, without a work permit, you must:

  • Ensure you have a valid study permit, and a Social Insurance Number (SIN).

This is a nine digit number given to you by Canadian Government. Social Insurance Number helps you to work in Canada, and also receive government benefits and services. So you must ensure you obtain it because it is mandatory.

  • Be a full time post-secondary student at a public post-secondary school, such as a college, university, trade or technical school.

Who is not eligible to work on campus?

  • When a student stop studying full-time
  • At the expiration of students study permit
  • Students who are on authorized leave from their studies
  • During switching of schools when the student is not currently studying

Your Work Location On Campus

Working On-campus obviously means that the work is located within the school premises, and this might be the buildings on your school campus. Even if your school have more campuses, you can only work at the campus where you’re studying.

Other locations that you can work

You can work in other areas if you work as a teaching or research assistant and areas that has to do with research like the library, hospital or even any research facility in your institution.

Your Employer on Campus

You can gain employment opportunities from any of the following:

  • The school (your institution)
  • Faculty member
  • Student organization
  • Your personal business that is physically located on-campus
  • Private business
  • Contractor that provides campus services to the school

Working Hours on Campus

The number of working hours is up to you as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements for working on campus.

Working off Campus

 Who is eligible to work off campus?

  • Part time student at a DLI
  • Student that are on an authorized leave
  • Those that have study permit without conditions on it

Working Hours off Campus

  • Only during regular school semesters
  • On breaks in the school year

To work off campus without a work permit, ensure you meet all of these requirements:

  • For student to be eligible to work off campus he/she must be a full-time student
  • You must be engaged in either a vocational or professional training program
  • Have a secondary level vocational training program
  • Ensure that your study program is up to half a year and would lead to the issuance of certificate
  • You must have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

 Working Hours off Campus

  • You can work at regular school semesters
  • You can work 20 hours every week. You can also do multiple jobs however, you must ensure that you always meet the conditions of your study permit.
  • On breaks in the school year

Internships or co-op student

In Canada there are certain study programs that require work experience as part of their curriculum. Kindly check the following requirements:

  • You have a valid study permit
  • Having a work is mandatory for you to complete your study program
  • There is letter from your school with instructions on the need to complete work activities in other to obtain the institution degree
  • The internship program totals fifty percent of your study program
  • You currently work for a company in your home country
  • You have jobs you do outside Canada, then you can work while your study permit is being processed and your intern work permit applications is done.

Who is not eligible?

  • Those taking one of the following are not eligible.
  • English or French as a second language
  • General interest courses, or
  • Those preparing for another study program.
