Causes of the Metal increase in Water Organisms; Crayfish, fish and Possible ways of Remedying the situation
Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land.
Water pollution is an appalling problem, powerful enough to lead the world on a path of destruction. Water is a natural solvent, enabling most pollutants to dissolve in it easily and contaminate it.
Causes of Water Pollution
- Industrial Waste
- Sewage and Wastewater
- Mining Activities
- Marine Dumping
- Accidental Oil Leakage
- The burning of fossil fuels
- Chemical fertilizers and pesticides
- Leakage From Sewer Lines
- Global Warming
- Radioactive Waste
- Urban Development
- Leakage From the Landfills
- Animal Waste
- Underground Storage Leakage
- Eutrophication
- Acid Rain
Types of Remediation
Phyto-accumulation – Phyto-accumulation is a mechanism through which heavy metals in soil and water at a specific region are accumulated in native plants and are disposed thereafter.
Phyto-stabilization – Phyto-stabilization comprises the establishment of a plant cover on the surface of the contaminated sites for reducing the mobility of contaminants within the vadose zone via accumulation by roots or immobilization within the rhizosphere, reducing off-site contamination
Phyto-degradation – Phyto-degradation, which is also known as phyto-transformation, is the breakdown of contaminants taken up by plants through metabolic processes within the plant or the breakdown of contaminants surrounding the plant through the effect of enzymes produced by the plants.
Phyto-volatilization – Phyto-volatilization is a process where plants take up contaminants from soil and release them as volatile form into the atmosphere via transpiration.
QUESTION:
A shipping company abandoned 35 vessel at Oron Jetty, 10 years later the concentration of metals in crayfish from Oron and its environ increase.
As a chief of the community write to the state government, pointing out the causes of the metal increase in crayfish and possible ways of remedying the situation
Answer:
Mbo Community,
Oron Local Government Area,
Akwa-Ibom State.
May 2, 2021.
The Executive Governor,
Akwa-Ibom State Government,
Nigeria.
Dear Sir/Madam,
CAUSES OF THE METAL INCREASE IN CRAYFISH AND POSSIBLE WAYS OF REMEDYING THE SITUATION
I am Chief Emeka Offor of Mbo Community in Oron Local Government Area, Akwa-Ibom State. Firstly, I will like to congratulate you, his excellency, the executive governor of Akwa-Ibom State on your victory in the last election as we look forward to a beautiful leadership.

Some of the scientist did a research on our water bodies at Oron and discovered that it is polluted as well as some of the water creatures especially crayfish and this is as a result of a shipping company that abandoned 35 vessel at Oron Jetty for 10 years which led to an increase in concentration of metals in crayfish, I write to point out the causes of the metal increase in crayfish and possible ways of remedying the situation.
Our water is polluted, from the results presented to me by the scientists. Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives in that water. When humans drink polluted water, it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuited for the desired use.
The type of water pollution that is affecting our river is water-soluble inorganic pollution, caused by pollutants such as acids, salts and toxic metals. Large quantities of these compounds will make water unfit for drinking and will cause the harm and in some cases death to aquatic life.
Note: To make your work different, change the causes of pollution or add something to the causes of pollution as well as its sources.
Considering the fact that the source of the pollution is known which are the 35 vessels, it is a point source pollution.
The crayfish feeds on both plant and smaller aquatic animals, which makes them omnivores. They feed mainly on fresh vegetation, along with living and non-living invertebrates, such as insects and snails. They also eat dead and decaying matter. In our river, the abandoned vessel deposits some particles of metals in the river which the crayfish in the river feeds on.

The condition of the pollution of the water body was detected in the laboratory through the help of the scientists where small samples of water and aquatic life(crayfish) were analyzed for different contaminants.
Disposing of wastes especially metallic wastes, toxic chemicals, oil spills are some of the causes of metal increase in crayfish is disposing. As crayfish lifespan is in water, it consumes whatever is sees around.
Note: For a more different and perfect work; use the best remediation for metals and discuss more to make a difference that would earn you your score.
The possible way to remedy the situation is by the process of phytostabilization. This comprises the establishment of a plant cover on the surface of the contaminated sites for reducing the mobility of contaminants within the vadose zone via accumulation by roots or immobilization within the rhizosphere, reducing off-site contamination.
Note: Talk more on the remedying step based on your understanding
However, to remedy disposing of metals in crayfish, toxic chemicals should be disposed properly. Household solvents, pesticides, and cleaners might not seem that bad. But, bleach, paint, paint thinner, ammonia, abandoned vessels and many chemicals are becoming a serious problem. If you combine millions of people every month dumping toxic chemicals down the drain or flushing them down the toilet, the effects add up. This is why proper disposal is important. Many household chemicals can be recycled. My community need a recycling center that can take the old paint, used motor oil, and other chemicals and recycle them. Community collection centers and drop-off sites also exist in some areas. My community need a hazardous waste collection day where those toxic old chemicals can be dropped off for safe disposal.
Note: You can forget about this old paragraph… You can still add it as an advisory part for future which is essential in letter writing.
Yours faithfully,
