How do you feel when the thought of aging comes up? It fills many with concern, anxiety and even dread. This is simply because aging is mostly associated with negativities such as diminished looks, a frail body and memory loss.
However, the fact is that people differ greatly in the thoughts regarding aging. Some enjoy it while others do not. The truth about this whole thing is that everybody wants to age well and if this be the case, then how do we go about it?
Aging is the process of becoming older, it is a process that is genetically and environmentally modulated. During aging, the body’s elastic cartilages turns into fibro cartilage and its hyaline cartilages calcify. This gives the individual another look.
It will interest you to know that, one can actually delay the aging process by protecting ones DNA. As we grow older, the ends of our chromosomes called telomeres become shorter and this make people more vulnerable to diseases. You may think that there is nothing you can do about it but then new research shows that, lifestyle changes boosted an enzyme that increases telomere length. Also, other studies show that diet and exercise can protect the telomere. This studies show that healthy habit may slow aging for a while as well.
Make Friends
Science has shown us more reason to be grateful to your friends. They will help you live longer. Researchers found elderly social butterflies which lived 10 years than others with less friends.
Follow a Mediterranean Diet
This is a diet high in fruits, whole grains, olive oil and fish. Findings also show that it lowers the risk of metabolic syndrome like obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. People in Okinawa in Japan once had the longest life because their food were rich green vegetables and fruits.
Exercise
The evidence is overwhelming. People who carry out exercise live longer on average than those who don’t. According to recent studies, regular physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some forms of cancer.
Properly Manage Stress
Dean Ornish, (MD) has published a research suggesting that lifestyle changes including stress management not only help prevent heart disease but may actually reverse it. Although avoiding stress is not a viable option for most people. Taking a deep breath and meditation for few minutes can help.
Aging is another segment of our lives. After the enjoyment of our youthfulness, we ought to treat aging jealously and cherish it.
