FEC approves 65 years Retirement Age for Teachers with Special Allowances – 40 years service year – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approves the increase in retirement age of teachers across the country, Nigeria. Nevertheless, FEC also approves special allowances to all teachers as a way to encourage all teachers and make them benefit greatly from the teaching job or profession apart from their usual salary.

FEC approves 65 years Retirement Age for Teachers plus Special Allowances – 40 years service year

Federal Executive Council (FEC) approves an increase in the retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 65 years making it a service year of 40 years instead of 35 years.

This will be of great benefit to teachers across the country as the added 5 years will contribute a lot to them.

This new law has been placed in the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Bill, 2021.

The bill seeks to give legal backing to new measures by the Buhari administration to enhance the teaching profession in the country.

This announcement was made known to the public through the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the first Council meeting of the year, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.

Apart from the increase in retirement age, other things added to the teachers as special allowances include:

• The introduction of bursary award
• Special rural posting allowances
• Science teachers’ allowance and other measures to boost the performance of the teachers and attract the best brains.

The essence of the age retirement increase is to serve as a reward for teachers’ dedication to duty and also to attract more people to the profession.
