FIFA Rankings: Super Eagles now 29th in the world, 3rd in Africa

FIFA Rankings: Super Eagles now 29th in the world, 3rd in Africa – The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed up from 31st to 29th position in the recent FIFA/Coca-Cola World rankings released on Thursday.

The recent rankings came after a six month international break occasioned by the novel COVID-19 pandemic, with the last rankings released in March where the Super Eagles ranked 31st with 1493 points.

This is the highest ranking ever  achieved by the team in seven years, having being last ranked in the top 30 in May 2013.

With the recent rankings, the Super Eagles now stand at third in Africa behind AFCON 2019 runners-up Senegal who stand at 20th in the world while Tunisia stand at 26th in the world.

The Super Eagles’ last involvement in a competitive game was in November, when they faced Benin Republic and Lesotho in the AFCON qualifiers defeating both sides 2-1 and 4-1 respectively.

They were billed to face  Sierra Leone in another AFCON qualifying game in March but with the outbreak of  COVID-19, the match was postponed.

The game has now been scheduled to be played on the 9th of November.

The Super Eagles highest ranking was in April 1994 when they stood at 5th position following the success of the team at the Africa Cup of Nations, where they emerged victorious following a 2-1 win over Zambia in the final.

It is also the highest ranking ever achieved by any African team.

Meanwhile, Belgium maintain their spot as 1st in the World ,France occupy the 2nd spot while Brazil, England and Portugal follow in at 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.

The Super Eagles will be looking to move up higher when the next world rankings will be released on the 22nd of October, 2020.
