How to Write PROJECT WORK Effectively – Errors Students Make and How to Avoid it

How to write project work effectively – Research project writing is a must do for every graduating student of the University, College of Education, Polytechnics and other higher institution. Any student writing a project is supervised by an academic staff of the school for proper guidance.

The primary thing to do once you’ve gotten to the stage of writing project is to submit your project topic proposals to your supervisor. Once your topic is approved, you can start the research project work immediately.

Note: Research on the topics you wish to submit to your supervisor to check if you can write on it. Don’t just pick topic that you may not know where and how to start it as your project topic as you may not really know how to do or handle it perfectly since you did not have enough information regarding to the topic.

Kindly select the ones you know too well which may not be too stressful while writing on it.

Also, write with good grammatical structure to avoid cancellation of work by your Project Supervisor. Your sentences and words you use in your work indicates and attributes to the mark they will give to you.

Remember, on the day of your defense, an external supervisor will come to assess you on your research work, so be careful on what you do.

FORMAT/PROJECT SETTINGS

Always make plan before you start writing on any topic as it will serve as a guideline to a successful research work. The format includes;

  1. Preliminary pages/part
  • Title page
  • Certification/Approval page
  • Dedication
  • Acknowledgement
  • Abstract
  • Table of content
  • List of tables
  • List of figures
  • List of symbols/Nomenclature (if necessary)
  1. Main work/project proper
  • Chapter one – Introduction
  • Chapter two – Literature Review
  • Chapter three – Research Methodology
  • Chapter four – Data Presentation and Analysis
  • Chapter five – Conclusion and Recommendation

Title page

This part comprises of the name of the institution, the title of the project work, the name of the researcher, matriculation number, the reason for the project work (in partial fulfillment of the course requirement for the award of B.Sc degree. The date comes last (month and year)

Certification/approval page

This contains the name of the institution, department, then a short write up to show the approval of the work by the Supervisor, Head of Department (HOD) and the External Supervisor, providing a space for signature and date for each of them.

Dedication

This contains information on who or where the researcher dedicate the work to, either to God, deity, someone dead or alive.

Acknowledgement

This contains information of groups of people; the researcher appreciates as contributors to the success of the project work.

Abstract

This is one of the major parts of project writing. It contains short summary in one page of information derived from the whole work. It contains shortened details of the statement of the problem, findings, methodology, conclusion, recommendations etc. Most departments italicize it.

Table of content

It contains details on the main headings, subheadings and page numbers of the work. Each page number is derived from the page number of the heading.

List of tables/figures/symbols

It comprises of arranging of headings of tables, figures, symbols etc. according to its page number.

THE MAIN WORK/PROJECT PROPER

Chapter one – The Introduction

This chapter comprises of the background of the study (details related to the project topic for easy understanding) , Statement of the Problem, Scope of the Study, Purpose of the Study, Significance of the Study, Research Questions and Research Hypotheses.

Chapter Two – Literature Review

It comprises of the following; Conceptual Framework, Theoretical Framework, Review of Empirical Studies and Summary of Literature Review. The review is based on current research on the ground work that has been done by other people. Please quote/reference people that have worked on it.

Chapter three – Research Methodology

It comprises of the following; Research Design, Area of the Study, Population of the Study, Sample and Sampling Technique, Instrument for Data Collection, Validity of the Instrument, Reliability of the Instrument, Procedure for Data Collection, Method of Data Analysis.

Research methodology is always written in past tense. It contains the population, area and data sampling with the procedures and equipment.

Chapter four – Data Analysis and Presentation

It comprises of Data analyses based on Research Question, Testing of hypotheses and Summary of findings. This is where you report using graphs, charts from the researches carried out

Chapter five – Conclusion and Recommendation

The subheadings include; Discussion of Findings, Educational Implication of the Study, Limitations of the Study, Recommendations, Summary of the Entire Study.

Make conclusion using the information you extracted from the previous chapters then recommend possible solutions.

References

This is the arrangement of quoted names in the research project work in alphabetical order using either MLA, APA or even Chicago format.

Appendix

This is where extra works like questionnaire are been added. Analysis of the questionnaire can also be found in the appendix for more understanding. You can as well put pictures of materials or equipments used or things you find very important which you did not attach to the main work.

In case your supervisor has not given you format or you have been given format, you can still use this format for an effective writing.
