As we all know, most job requirements accepts youthful age of not more than 25 or 27 years when the student is graduating at the age of 29 years. In line with this, the Nigerian Senate seeks the Federal Government to instruct or direct the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity to set up a committee that would assist in the review of age limit or barrier for employment and to allow skilled and competent Nigerians notwithstanding their age to be employed or recruited by MDAs.

This implies that age would no longer be a barrier to securing a job in Nigeria if you are adjudge qualified for the position you are searching for. Indeed, Nigerian graduates and non-graduates who merits a position or who are most qualified would be selected notwithstanding their ages.

This age limit or barrier has led so many Nigerians in possessing age declaration as they keep on forging different date of births that would suit the position or job they are looking for.

Senator Ibrahim Gobir (Sokoto East) was the one that raised the motion of reduction or scraping of age limit or barrier in Nigeria during recruitment and employment exercises.

According to Senator Ibrahim Gobir (APC, Sokoto), “the age barrier had prevented many Nigerians from securing employment in government agencies. Due to the high unemployment rate in the country, many graduates spend ten years or more seeking jobs and this puts them in a disadvantage position by no fault of theirs.”

He furthered said; “Many individuals decided to falsify their age to fall within the age limit for them to be gainfully employed.”

This motion of Senator Ibrahim on reduction of age limit or barrier in Employment exercises was supported by Senator Bala Ibn N’allah.

Senator Bala Ibn N’allah said “I think the legal basis for this senate to proceed on that lies in the fact that as an institution we must take judicial notice of the fact Federal Government on its own placed embargo on employment for over 13 years,” the senator said.

“So that period of the embargo placed by the Federal Government itself should be what we should consider in the review of the age limit.

“For example, if the age limit is 23 we will now add the 13 or 14 years of the embargo on employment to the age already benchmarked for employment so that the age will now be plus 13 because it is the Government on its own that placed the embargo on employment.”

This reduction and scrapping of age barrier or limit for employment and recruitment exercises in Nigeria will be of help to lots of people that has the knowledge and skill but their age has denied them of so many opportunities. This will add value to lots of people’s life.

As soon as it is passed into law, believe me, you will be the first to know about it.
