President Buhari Signs and Approves New National Minimum Wage Bill of N30,000 into law on Thursday, 18th April, 2019

Finally, the long awaited approval from the President to sign the new national minimum wage has been done today. President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the new minimum wage bill. This implies that the minimum wage or salary for workers in Nigeria is now N30,000.

This indeed will be of great benefit to the Nation at large at least it would assist in so many ways. Thus, it will become a new pay structure for Nigeria workers.

Though, some state governors opposed this new law by saying that they cannot pay their workers the N30,000 minimum wage. Nevertheless, President Buhari had signed the minimum  wage bill into law.

This information was brought to us by Mr Buhari’s aide on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, as he disclosed to our journalists.

When will the implementation of the New Minimum wage of N30,000 take effect or start

According to Mr Enang, while briefing the State House correspondents, said that the implementation the new law of N30,000 minimum wage starts immediately. Hopefully, there will be a difference in payment by next month.

Mr Enang said the signing of the bill into law now “makes it compulsory for all employers of labour in Nigeria to pay their workers the sum of N30,000.”

Groups or Workers that are excluded from the new law of N30,000 minimum wage

The presidential aide, Mr. Enang, said employers with less than 25 workers are excluded from paying the new wage.

He said workers of “a ship which sails out of the country and other persons who are in other kinds of regulated employment which are accepted by the act” are also excluded from the new wage.

What to do if Employers fails to pay their workers up to the minimum wage of N30,000

Mr Enang said with the new law, workers now have the right to sue their employers who fail to pay them the new minimum wage. He said the act empowers the Minister for Labour or his representative to act in the case of such denial of the new wage.
